Custom Aluminum Panel Fabrication with CNC Ventilation Slots & Multi-Color Anodizing — Available in Silver, Black & Gold

This case showcases a custom aluminum panel project where the customer required a clean, professional-looking front panel with integrated heatsink ventilation slots, available in multiple surface finishes. Using 5052 aluminum sheet as the base material, the panels were precision CNC punched with uniform rectangular slot patterns, then finished with anodizing treatment to achieve three distinct colors — silver, black, and gold — meeting both functional heat dissipation and aesthetic branding.

Case Details

Customer Background & Requirements

The customer produces rack-mounted audio and industrial control equipment and needed a front panel solution that:

  • Provided effective heat dissipation through ventilation slots
  • Offered multiple color options to match different product lines
  • Maintained a premium appearance suitable for consumer-facing products
  • Kept tooling and per-unit costs under control for medium production volumes

Our Solution

① Material Selection 5052 aluminum alloy sheet was selected as the primary material. It offers excellent plasticity and formability, outstanding corrosion resistance, and is well-suited for precision punching operations.

② CNC Punching — Heatsink Slot Pattern The ventilation slot array was processed using CNC punch press tooling:

  • Uniform rectangular slots arranged in a structured grid pattern for maximum airflow
  • Dimensional tolerances strictly controlled: hole-to-hole position tolerance ±0.2mm, hole-to-edge tolerance ±0.2mm
  • Surface burr removal performed after punching to ensure clean, smooth edges
  • First-piece inspection conducted before batch production to verify accuracy

③ Surface Treatment — Wire Brushing (Brushed Finish) Before anodizing, panels underwent a brushing (wire drawing) process to create a consistent linear texture on the surface.

  • Brushing grades applied: 150 or 180 grit for a fine, uniform metal texture
  • This step effectively conceals minor surface imperfections and enhances the premium metallic appearance

④ Anodizing & Color Treatment All three color variants were produced through the anodizing and coloring process:

Color Process Notes
Silver Standard anodizing, no coloring Natural aluminum oxide finish
Black Anodizing + black electrochemical coloring Oxide thickness 10μm
Gold Anodizing + gold chemical dyeing Color time & temperature precisely controlled

Key anodizing parameters applied:

  • Voltage: 12–20V
  • Electrolyte temperature: 20–25°C
  • Anodizing time: 15–40 minutes
  • Oxide film thickness: 8–10μm (standard), 10μm (black)

Sealing was completed in hot water at 85–98°C for 15–30 minutes to fully close the oxide pores, enhancing corrosion resistance and preventing surface contamination.

Process Flow Summary

Raw 5052 Sheet → CNC Punching (Slot Pattern)
→ Deburring → Wire Brushing
→ Pre-treatment (Degreasing & Acid Wash)
→ Anodizing → Color Dyeing (Black / Gold)
→ Sealing → Cleaning & Drying → QC Inspection → Packaging

Customer Feedback

The customer was highly satisfied with the outcome. The combination of precision CNC punching, brushed metal texture, and multi-color anodizing delivered a front panel that looked premium across all three color variants. The black and gold versions in particular received strong positive feedback for their visual appeal and consistent color uniformity.
